Ok, so a new doctor, a new companion, a new producer, a new Tardis, a new logo, a new title sequence and a new musical introduction but even with all these changes I liked this story. Matt Smith has taken up his new role well, as a critic of some of the new series of doctor who I was waiting to be deflated by an over hyped new beginning but was actually impressed.
Let me step back and comment on the title sequence, I loved the new titles, reminded me of Tom Bakers titles, however the music was awful. I understand that show must be kept up to date and there has been many versions of Ron Grainers original theme but for me this pop version of the theme lost the wow/scare factor it has always delivered to the watching audience.
The new logo is also really cool, I really like it.
The story as with most regeneration stories sees the doctor taking time to adjust to his new body. The hospital looked similar to the one in spearhead from space and a nod was made to this episode with the doctor taking his clothes from the staff changing rooms as John Pertwee had done in 1970.
The Doctors outfit however nods towards Troughton with the bow tie and braces. So as a watcher who was brought up watching the classic series I felt quite warm with all these references and similarities. It was also good to see the hat stand back.
To the story, it reminded me a little of girl in the fireplace with Amelia’s disappointment of not seeing the doctor for years.
I think it was generally interesting but I will leave the story anaylsis to other posters.
I don’t think as Barry Wocks suggested that the logo on the laptop has anything to do with the series rather than an anonymous brand rather than product placement that the Beeb are always so careful to remove.
I do however believe that the crack was caused by the Doctor. Not just from what Prisoner Zero says but at the end when the Doctor switches the oscilloscope off below the standard line pattern was the same shape as the crack on Amelias wall.
Prisoner Zero says "The Pandorica will open", I believe that this has some fundamental element to this series. Its significance will become more apparent. I also believe I’ve read that one episode is called ‘the Pandorica opens’.
